The Democratic establishment descended on the Hamptons this weekend for something resembling a “political royal wedding,” bringing together the world of big-money politics and insider figures from the Clinton era.
The newlyweds were Alex Soros, the son of George Soros, the Democratic Party's largest donor, and Huma Abedin, a political aide who has often been described as almost a daughter to Hillary Clinton, the former first lady and secretary of state. Held on Saturday at Mr. Soros's residence in Water Mill, New York, the wedding drew private jets and many Clinton family aides, creating a rare concentration of wealth and power.
In addition to the couple's family, the guest list included: Hillary and Bill Clinton, former Vice President Kamala Harris with her husband Doug Emhoff, Senator Chuck Schumer, Representative Hakeem Jeffries, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, personalities like Nicky Hilton Rothschild, fashion world figures like Anna Wintour, old friends of the Clintons like Susie Tompkins Buell, and even the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama.
According to four people who attended and several representatives of the guests, the vocal group Boyz II Men performed at the wedding, and speeches were given by Alex's brother Jonathan Soros, Hillary Clinton, Anna Wintour, and Edi Rama. The menu included agnolotti with thyme, cold pea soup, and "American Wagyu beef with roasted shrimp."
The celebrations took place on the same weekend as chaos raged in the US and abroad: protests against President Trump, the killing of a Minnesota lawmaker in an act of political violence, and high tensions between Israel and Iran. Meanwhile, in the Hamptons, all was quiet, with motorcades of black SUVs bringing guests down a narrow alley of greenery and purple flowers.
Alex Soros, 39, has become an increasingly prominent figure in the world of progressive philanthropy. He has a doctorate in history and has taken over the funds previously managed by his father, George Soros, now 94. Alex has called himself “more political” than his father and is very active on social media.
His romance with Huma Abedin, 49, has attracted high-society attention, not only for its connection to the Clintons, but also because her previous marriage to Anthony Weiner ended in scandal, due to his online sex scandals.
The couple announced their engagement in July last year. They had originally planned to marry secretly, but after an engagement party hosted by Hillary Clinton in December, they were convinced to have a traditional wedding. “I think she deserves it,” Hillary told Vogue magazine. “She deserves to have a moment like this.”
The celebrations also included a smaller ceremony on Friday honoring Abedin's Islamic faith and Soros' Jewish heritage. A rabbi and an imam led the ceremony, according to attendees.
Unlike Soros, “Abedin is more reserved” and has preferred to stay out of the spotlight. She started working with Hillary Clinton as an intern at age 19 and has since taken on more prominent roles. She wrote a memoir in 2021 and is now a contributor to MSNBC.
Their marriage positions them as an “influential political couple,” who are expected to remain in the public spotlight.
This weekend, “the Hamptons felt like a Clinton-era reunion,” with guests gathering at luxury hotels and dinner parties to enjoy time together. “Traffic has been chaos the last few days,” said Zach Erdem, a restaurant owner in Southampton.
The attendance of wealthy and influential figures contrasts with the “internal debate within the Democratic Party” about how to regain the support of America’s working class — a segment of the population with which the party seems to have lost touch. As Maseratis, Porsches and other luxury cars drove past the wedding venue, some passersby stopped in curiosity. A woman leaned out of the car window and shouted:
“Hello, Bill!” — although it is unknown whether former President Clinton heard him.
This wedding may be “the most important social event of the summer,” but only for a few weeks: later this month, many of the same guests will travel to “Venice for the wedding of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez.”
