MP Bardhyl Kollçaku has listed the reasons why NATO is interested in military bases in Albania.

While commenting on the possibility of a NATO military base in Porto Romano of Durrës, the former commander of the Armed Forces said that the countries with which Albania borders have Russian influence.

According to him, there are Russian assets and presence in Greece and Bulgaria and this is one of the reasons why NATO is looking for bases in our country.

"If we look at the southern border, we have Greece, the Pieru Base is 100% owned by the Chinese. The base of Thessaloniki 70% of the Russian assets, the ports of Varna in Bulgaria or of Constanta, which has a Russian presence, Durrës meets not only the security and the shortest land access to reinforce with forces and means the troops on the eastern border of the alliance. With the new decision, we will have an increase in seats", Kollçaku told Euronews Albania.

The former commander of the Armed Forces indicated that the base in Kuçovo will be a reserve tactical air base of the alliance to increase air security for operations.

"Works have started on the Kuçova base, it is mainly a NATO investment. It will be the alliance's reserve tactical airbase to enhance air security for operations in support of alliance missions in the east, but also for training and exercise. The construction of this base will be completed in 2 and a half years" , he said.
