The sensational escape from prison in Greece, the Constitutionalist "overthrows" Ilir Cup of the "gang of grandmothers"

The Constitutional Court has overturned the claims of Ilir Kupa to annul the sentence of 25 years in prison given by Albanian justice for the violent escape from Trikalla prison in Greece in 2013.

The cup was judged in Albania for this matter, based on the investigation file received from the Greek side. This is because after the sensational escape, he was handcuffed to the motherland as part of the "grandmother's gang". In the Constitutional Court, Kupa claimed that the decisions given by the First Instance and Appeal of Serious Crimes and then by the Supreme Court were unconstitutional.

According to him, he was denied the right to be heard in the Supreme Court and that the courts at all three levels had convicted him in the absence of evidence.

In her reasoning, the Constitutional Court assessed Kupa's claims as groundless and decided not to consider his request in the plenary session. Ilir Kupa was sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Court for Serious Crimes in May 2016, a sentence that was reduced to 16 years and 8 months on appeal. The Appeal decision was overturned by the Supreme Court in November 2022 and the 25-year sentence was upheld.

For the Greek case, Ilir Kupa was accused of 6 criminal offenses, among which "structured criminal group" and "intentional murder of a public official", remaining in the attempt, to the detriment of two Greek prison guards.

From Trikalla prison, Kupa escaped with 10 other convicted Albanians, including Admir Murataj and Klement Cala, involved in the 2019 robbery of millions of euros in Rinas, where Murataj was killed. While in the criminal case, where he was part of the "gang of grandmothers", accused of 13 episodes of armed robbery, Kupa received a sentence of 35 years in prison.
