56 thousand pounds per year, for one convict: How many Albanian prisoners have

In the last three years, only 13 Albanian prisoners have been transferred from English prisons to Albanian ones to continue serving their sentences.

The newspaper "The Sun on Sunday" has dedicated an article to this issue, stating that "the agreement worth 8 million pounds, between the British and Albanian governments, aimed at the transfer of 200 prisoners."

But, according to this newspaper, sources from the Ministry of Justice in Tirana have told them that "only the transfer of 13 people has been made possible."

This small number has come about as a result of delays by Albanian courts, which must recognize the decision issued by English courts for each prisoner serving over four years in prison when applying for transfer.

56,000 pounds is the cost of keeping a prisoner in prison in England for a year.

Albanian prisoners in England, over the last seven years, writes The Sun, constitute the highest number of prisoners of foreign nationalities.

Currently, there are 940 Albanians in English prisons, mainly convicted of involvement in selling cocaine or setting up cannabis farms.
