French media outlet Nice Matin has published details about the life of Luis Miguel Varela Mendes, the Portuguese tourist who was murdered on Tuesday, August 18, at the luxury 'Principotes' complex while on vacation in Ksamil.

The young man had moved to Nice at the age of 11 and attended the Vernier school, before settling in the Gambetta neighborhood.

In the La Semeuse association, the 20-year-old was known by everyone by his nickname, “Milton.” The news of his stabbing death by Sokrat Vata, an employee of the complex, was shocking to the community.

“I was informed quite quickly,” says Christophe Tassano, general director of the association. The young man was followed and supported by the teams of the La Ruche social center, on Trachel street, where he participated in special activities for adolescents and young people. “Young Milton was very loved and very respected in the neighborhood. He had a role as a mediator. He always tried to calm conflicts,” says Christophe Tassano.

Albania was not supposed to be the holiday destination for Mendes. Milton and his friends had another plan. They were supposed to leave for Spain on August 26, as part of the “Sac à dos” program, organized by the family assistance fund. But, due to delays in organizing this trip, the group decided to travel to Albania with their own money, without giving up the trip to Spain. According to Christophe Tassano, the teachers had tried to convince them not to go to Albania.

Since the tragedy, the latter have immediately mobilized to support the family. The director of the La Semeuse social center is offering her support during this painful situation. The Nice Côte d'Azur Metropolis has also been informed and has engaged mediators for public peace.

“We also direct people in need to the victim assistance and support services, set up in collaboration with the Metropol,” explains Christophe Tassano. This is the Victim Reception Center. “The specialized prevention team has strengthened its presence in the affected areas and maintains close contact with young people, including those who were with Milton in Albania.”

Recently, Mendes' family was going through a difficult time due to their apartment recently being destroyed by a fire. The 20-year-old's parents are staying in a hotel in the Saint-Charles neighborhood.

The article also mentions the costly procedures for repatriating the young man's body from Albania to Portugal. They should also be able to have the assistance of a lawyer in Albania to follow a court procedure that has just begun.

A fundraising account has been opened in collaboration with the family to help them cover these expenses. By Friday, over 6,300 euros had been raised.

In addition to La Semeuse, the Dix Étoiles association has also been activated, which is very vocal in supporting the Cape Verde community in Nice and is standing by Mendes' relatives for the many procedures that await them.

The day before, the author Sokrat Vata, who appeared before the court for the security measure (which was imposed on him by prison arrest), apologized to the victim's family and expressed remorse. He said that the group of foreign tourists had cursed and hit them when the staff asked them to remain calm and that he had taken the knife from the Portuguese man while trying to neutralize him in an attempt to defend himself.

The court also sentenced two Turks, Ezgi Parlak and Nuh Mahmutoglu, to indefinite prison terms for attempting to remove Vata from the scene by hiding him in the trunk of their car.

Waiters Ildi Cekani, Serxhi Selimi and Ervis Bunci, who punched the 20-year-old, will remain in prison for 45 days.

Bodyguards Luciano Seferi, Moisid Matushaj, Romeo Shehu and Kristo Kosho, as well as waiter Murat Zhabina, were forced to report.

Owner Bekim Bulica and David Heurtevent, also an employee of 'Principote', are wanted. Bulica for concealing the crime, while Heurtevent, alias Gjana, as an accomplice in the crime after allegedly punching the 20-year-old.

The hearing, which was held behind closed doors, lasted over 9 hours.
