Namazgja Mosque

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during his visit to Albania together with Prime Minister Edi Rama inaugurated the largest mosque in the Balkans, the Namazgja Mosque, built with the financial contribution of Turkey.

The mosque has 4 minarets 56 meters high and a dome 35 meters high, with details reminiscent of Ottoman architecture.

The mosque is spread over almost 10,000 square meters and has the capacity to host up to 10,000 believers at the same time.

After almost 9 and a half years since the opening of the Namazgja foundations at a cost of 24.3 million euros, it has been opened to welcome the faithful.

The construction of the largest Mosque in the Balkans began in 2015 on the land known as Namazgjah in the heart of Tirana. The works were almost completed in 2019, but the opening of the mosque was held up for another five years.

With the financial support of the Directorate for Religious Affairs in Turkey, the Diyanet, part of the Great Mosque, is also the library, cultural center, parking lot, the course of the holy book, the Koran, the exhibition hall, the canteen and the conference hall.

This is not the first time that Turkey has invested in religious buildings. Several hundreds of thousands of euros were spent by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency for the restoration of Et'hem Bey Mosque. The Turkish government has attached great importance to the preservation of historical buildings from the Ottoman period, investing around 20 million euros in 500 restoration projects through the TIKA agency.

This value is 20 times higher than what the government of Albania gives to religious communities. This year, slightly more than 142 million lek or about 1.4 million euros were allocated to religious cults from the State Budget.

Most of the fields, almost 39 million ALL, were distributed to the Muslim Community, this in relation to the number of believers. The Autocephalous Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church each received 37.9 million Lek, while the rest went to the World Bektashi Patriarchate.
