Following the loss of life of a 17-year-old girl from Durres due to acute meningitis, prophylactic measures have been immediately initiated for the medical staff of the Durres Hospital Emergency Department and her family members.
Meanwhile, the completion of laboratory tests at the IPH is awaited to determine the exact subtype of the strain, which will help assess the risk and stop the spread of this infectious disease.
The Local Education Office in Durrës informs Top Channel that measures are also being taken at the “Leonik Tomeo” high school, where the 17-year-old was studying. The school premises will be disinfected, while health authorities are tracing people who had contact with her. The high school student lost her life in the infectious disease service of the QSUT, after her condition rapidly deteriorated.
She presented to the Durrës Regional Hospital Emergency Department on Saturday with various symptoms, such as headache and vomiting. Despite efforts for treatment and her transfer to the QSUT, the girl did not survive.
Doctors at Durres Hospital, off camera, have stated that this form of meningitis has not appeared in the city for a long time. Health authorities are investigating to understand the source and prevent other cases.
While there is uncertainty and concern in the community, the Local Health Care Unit in Durrës has not issued any media announcements about the measures taken.
According to doctors, this severe form of meningitis appears for the first time in many years in Durrës and brings attention back to the necessity of strengthening preventive measures to protect public health.
