Two earthquakes measuring 3.9 and 4 on the Richter scale were recorded shortly after midnight in southern Albania , according to data published by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC). The tremors were felt in several cities in the country, including Elbasan, Berat and the areas around Skrapar .
According to EMSC , the earthquakes occurred at 00:58 and 00:59, with epicenters about 16 kilometers southwest of Çorovodë and 77 kilometers south of Elbasan .
The depth of the tremors was only 2.5 kilometers, which makes the earthquake classified as shallow and therefore more sensitive at the surface.
The earthquake was recorded about 104 kilometers from Tirana, and according to initial reports from citizens on social media, the tremors lasted several seconds, causing concern, but no material damage or casualties have been reported so far.
“Experts explain that a magnitude 4.0 earthquake is moderate, but can be clearly felt in buildings, especially when it occurs at such a shallow depth. “Shallow earthquakes are often perceived as stronger by the population, even if the magnitude is medium,” the EMSC technical explanation says.
