The Tirana Prosecution Office has today charged Elvis Shkambi with "murder of public officials in the line of duty", as part of the investigation into the murder of Appeals Judge Astrit Kalaja.
Top Channel journalist Anila Hoxha reports that the closure of the investigation into the incident was communicated today to Shkambi, who is currently under "prison arrest" security measure.
Meanwhile, according to the same sources, Gjon Shkambi, Elvis Shkambi's uncle, will be charged on Monday. Elvis Shkambi also faces the charge of "murder under qualifying circumstances" remaining in the attempted stage, in connection with the injury of two people, a father and son, who were opposing parties in the judicial process.
In the previous stages of the proceedings, he was also investigated for illegal possession of weapons. As for Gjon Shkambi, he stated that he was unaware of his nephew's plans and that he had no knowledge that Elvis would take such action.
This position was previously made known by his defense, while the Prosecution has raised doubts about his role in the incident.
What happened to judge Astrit Kalaja?
The serious incident occurred on October 6, 2025, at around 3:40 p.m., in the premises of the Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction in Tirana. During a court session, Elvis Shkambi fired a gun at judge Astrit Kalaja, as well as at two other people, father and son, Ragip and Ervis Kurtaj, who were parties to the trial. Kalaja lost his life, while the other two people were injured.
According to investigations made public by the Prosecution, the shootings occurred after Judge Kalaja had read the verdict in a property case involving the Shkambi and Kurtaj families. The Prosecution has also stated that it is investigating the role that Gjon Shkambi may have had in inciting the actions against the opposing party.
