Ali Sekeroğlu had called for participation in a demonstration against insufficient pensions, through a post on social media.
“If you are not there, a person will be missing. Don’t say: ‘What difference will it make if I don’t come?’ Strength lies in unity. My God, you hear the cries within us. I wish our country and those who govern us would hear them too,” he wrote. Last Friday, the 60-year-old retired police officer took part in the demonstration held in Ankara, draped in the Turkish flag.
He shouted that he could no longer handle the situation and said that "those who brought us to this point should be ashamed."

He held a banner and, in his right hand, a gun, which he then used to end his life in front of a large crowd.
The banner read: " Not for money, but for my honor ."
Sekeroğlu was a father of two. Turkish media reported that he had recently become a grandfather but had not been able to give his grandson or granddaughter the customary golden gift.
