US President Donald Trump appears willing to take a small step toward resuming negotiations with Iran, offering sanctions relief and the release of frozen Iranian assets in exchange for concrete steps by Tehran on its nuclear program, according to US officials who told Axios.

Washington's message to Tehran comes as efforts by Qatari and Pakistani mediators in recent days to bring the two sides back to the negotiating table after a freeze in talks since July have stalled.

For now, Washington and Tehran are still far from an agreement on key issues.

Specifically, Iran wants the talks to focus on the Strait of Hormuz and the US naval blockade of its ports, while the Trump administration is seeking concessions from Tehran over its nuclear program. However, the US proposal leaves room for optimism about a possible diplomatic breakthrough after Trump said “no” to the latest proposal put forward by Iran.

The mediators are scheduled to meet in New York with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss a Qatari proposal that the parties have been negotiating in recent days. This will be followed by a similar meeting with Trump administration officials to convey Tehran's positions and try to reach a consensus.

A US official with knowledge of the indirect talks between the two sides described the contacts as “positive and constructive,” noting that Iran “has shown that it is flexible on nuclear issues.” He stressed, however, that differences remain and made clear that there will be no deal “unless these issues are addressed.”

"The parties remain in disagreement over the timing of implementation of the commitments and who will take the first steps," the same source added.
