Prosecutors in Iran have launched a criminal case against a theater company after the publication of a video from a play in Tehran, where an actress is seen in close contact with her male colleague during the performance.

Iranian authorities claim that the scene violates the Islamic Republic's "social norms," which restrict public physical contact between men and women who are not related, even when it comes to artistic activities.

The event was recorded during the play "Tehran Paris Tehran" , which tells the story of Sarah, a young woman who travels from Tehran to Paris and then returns to Iran, where she seeks revenge for the murder of her father.

At the center of the investigation is a scene where actress Fatemeh Masoudifar approaches her colleague Mehrdad Sedighian, while he appears to place his hand on her head.

The video was filmed by a spectator with a mobile phone and later published on social media.

The production disputes the interpretation of the video.

The company behind the show has responded to the allegations, arguing that the video does not accurately portray what happened on stage.

According to the production, the angle from which the scene was filmed creates the impression that the two actors are closer to each other than the actual distance during the performance.

The production has also clarified that the characters played by the two actors are brother and sister within the show's storyline.

For this reason, the company claims that contact between them does not constitute a violation of Islamic rules.

According to the company, the moment is part of a dramatic scene where the two characters face a difficult emotional situation and the physical contact serves to convey the development of the story.

Artists facing legal action

The latest case is part of a series of legal proceedings and measures against artists in Iran for violating religious and social rules.

Just a few days ago, an appeals court in the city of Qom upheld the sentences against singer Parastu Ahmadi and seven other musicians for an online concert broadcast on YouTube in December 2024, where the singer appeared without a hijab.

The defendants were sentenced to 74 lashes each, while they were also banned from performing or traveling for two years.

The new case against the theater company brings to light the clash between artistic expression and religious and social norms in Iran, where authorities continue to crack down on artists for content deemed contrary to the country's norms.
