Leading Democrats on the Senate and House foreign affairs committees have formally asked the State Department to launch an investigation into the conduct of Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece.

This reaction comes after an investigation published by the Wall Street Journal, which revealed her efforts to promote a Greek company's gas deals throughout Southeast Europe.

In a letter sent Thursday to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, expressed deep concerns about what she called Guilfoyle's "inappropriate use of official position."

According to concerns raised by lawmakers, the ambassador allegedly included a registered lobbyist in official meetings with foreign officials, lobbying for one of his Greek clients and the latter's joint venture with a Greek state-backed company.

In addition to questionable ties to lobbyists, her frequent trips on private jets have also been at the center of criticism, raising major questions about the ethics and transparency of her diplomatic function.
