President Donald Trump declared Saturday evening that Flavio Bolsonaro, the defeated candidate in Brazil's presidential election, can remain in the United States indefinitely.

The comments, made to reporters during a Halloween party at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, suggest that relations between the Western Hemisphere's two largest democracies could remain tense for some time, despite US Secretary of State Marco Rubio holding talks with Brazil's top diplomat earlier in the day, Reuters reports.

“He can stay here as long as he wants,” Trump said of Bolsonaro, who left Brazil after losing the election to leftist incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, despite leading in most opinion polls. “In my opinion, the election was a disgrace.”

The Brazilian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Outside observers described the election as free and fair. Bolsonaro's decision to flee to the United States came after a Brazilian Supreme Court judge ordered his passport revoked shortly after his election defeat. The candidate is facing two federal money-laundering investigations in Brazil, and police there considered him a fugitive.

As Reuters previously reported, he was admitted to the United States through humanitarian parole, a status that typically lasts only one year.

Earlier on Saturday, Rubio said he had spoken with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira during a Group of 20 meeting in Atlanta and that the two would meet again in a few weeks.

In comments that suggested a possible rapprochement between the parties, Rubio told reporters that he and Vieira were expected to meet again in France at the G7 foreign ministers' summit next month. Brazil is expected to attend the meeting as an observer, he noted.

A U.S. official and a person familiar with the matter told Reuters that Trump has no current plans to support the political ambitions of Bolsonaro, who has cast himself as Brazil's legitimate leader, despite allowing the Brazilian politician into the United States. On Saturday, Trump said he had no plans to meet with Bolsonaro.

Rubio said Saturday that the U.S. government “was not directly involved in any of the actions” that led to Bolsonaro’s departure from Brazil earlier this week. However, Reuters and other media outlets have reported that Jason Miller, a White House official, helped organize Bolsonaro’s trip.

Bolsonaro's father, former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, is in prison in Brazil after being convicted of plotting a coup after his defeat in a bid for re-election in 2022. Lula himself spent 17 months in prison in 2018 and 2019 on corruption charges, which were later dropped.
