The head of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group,  Taulant Balla , has reacted regarding the transfer of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj from Durrës detention center to Fier prison, following concerns raised about the conditions in which he is being held.

In a statement to the media after the end of the plenary session in the Assembly, Balla focused on Veliaj's situation, emphasizing the importance of respecting the rights of detained and convicted persons.

The head of the socialist group announced that he has also received complaints about former President Ilir Meta, which he has forwarded to the responsible ministers for handling.

"Regarding the Erion Veliaj issue, I have also said it for other people... I have also received complaints about former President Ilir Meta, I have addressed them to the relevant ministers. Issues related to the treatment of detainees and prisoners should be addressed within the framework of the process required for EU membership," declared Balla.

The reaction comes after Veliaj's transfer to Fier prison, a decision that has been opposed by the mayor and his legal representatives.

Veliaj has claimed that he has been placed in solitary confinement and that his communication with family members and lawyers has been restricted, requesting the intervention of responsible institutions to verify the conditions of detention.
