Authorities on the island of Crete issued an emergency alert on Friday after bad weather brought strong winds and flooding, forcing the closure of roads and schools.

Heavy rains have flooded homes and covered roads with debris in parts of the Greek island, while strong winds have forced the cancellation of ferry sailings, broadcaster ERT reported.

Authorities said emergency services remained on high alert, with firefighters responding to several incidents and crews working to restore traffic to affected areas.

Officials urged residents to follow safety guidelines and avoid unnecessary travel, as the bad weather was expected to continue until Saturday afternoon.
