Gianluca Zambrotta is 48 years old today and in his career he can boast of important experiences at big clubs such as Juventus, Milan and Barcelona.
Winning the 2006 World Cup with Italy was the icing on the cake in a footballing journey of a true top player.
The former full-back of the Italian national team, after hanging up his boots, has not left the world of sports and today is often present at various padel events and activities, along with many other former footballers who are passionate about this new sport.
"Today I can only play padel." This is how Zambrotta explains as a guest of Gianluca Gazzoli on the Bsmt podcast. The former defender suffers from varicosity, an orthopedic term that indicates deformities of the limbs, in his case the legs, which are noticeably curved.
"It has deepened over time - he explains -. It is due to a genetic predisposition, because I do not have internal menisci. I will soon have surgery on both knees". And in this regard he adds: "Today I am a laboratory model for many surgeons: when they look at my legs, they ask how this man can walk".
Zambrotta explains what varicose veins are and the surgeons' opinion
The former defender explains in detail: "Fortunately, I didn't have any major knee injuries, I only had 3 surgeries for the internal meniscus, a very simple and routine intervention - he adds -. So, I no longer have internal meniscuses on either the left or the right. Over time, my legs have become even more curved, so much so that today I am a model for many surgeons, who when they look at my legs say: 'How does this man manage to walk?'" Today, Zambrotta continues to play sports, specifically padel, but will soon undergo surgery.
"Today I can only do paddle tennis, I feel a normal discomfort, not pain - he adds -. Many people ask how I manage to walk with legs like that. I have been visited by 3-4 important surgeons at the national level and no one understands how I can have knees like that and still do physical activity like paddle tennis, however I don't run, I keep myself in shape with the pool".
He will soon undergo surgery: "This year, the time has come for me to have surgery by performing an osteotomy on both legs. They will correct it by cutting small parts of the bone above and below me and placing metal plates, to avoid a total prosthesis for the time being, although I will have to put it in a few years."
In general, Zambrotta explains that varicosity is not necessarily a consequence of football: "Professional sport at high levels brings physical problems, it is impossible not to have concerns after your career - he concludes -. There were players like Rivaldo, who had the same problem as me and was operated on without any problems, today he is active normally. It all depends on personal choices, whether to have the operation or not". And he ends with a joke: "Today people recognize me without even seeing my face (laughs)".
