The death of George Baldock shook Greek football on Wednesday evening. The defender of the Greek national team was found dead in the swimming pool of his home.
The player had lost contact with his family and it was his wife who spoke to the owner of the apartment where Baldock lived, asking for information and he found the body of the 31-year-old inside the pool.
An autopsy conducted Thursday revealed that Baldock died of asphyxiation.
He had swallowed a lot of water, which caused him to suffocate.
In fact, this cause was thought from the beginning by the doctors, since his body had no marks, wounds or bruises that would indicate any criminal act.
The footballer was transferred to the Panathinaikos team in the summer. He had decided to start a new chapter in his career after playing for seven years at Sheffield United.
Baldock was born in England and started his professional career at MK Dons, where he stayed for eight years.
After several transfers, where he wore the shirts of Tamworth, Oxford United and Northampton, the defender started a new chapter in his career in 2017 at Sheffield United in 2017.
He made more than 200 appearances for the Reds, 83 of them in the Premier League, where he scored two goals and provided six assists, before accepting an offer from Greek club Panathinaikos.
The defender played 12 games for the Greek national team, 4 of which in this season. He accepted the invitation to play with the Hellenic national team in May 2022, while he made his debut in the challenge won 1-0 against Northern Ireland.
