The football public in Portugal was shocked after information that began to circulate rapidly and was truly scandalous.
One of Benfica's most talented footballers, Andreas Schjelderup, admitted distributing child pornography. He pleaded guilty to distributing illegal child pornography, for which he now faces criminal charges. However, Benfica stood by its player during this difficult time and the club's new president, Rui Costa, spoke out.
"Of course we will be with him. The player himself took responsibility. Schjelderup did something that he admits he shouldn't have done. Knowing him, he didn't do it out of malice, but he did it," said Rui Costa.
The Norwegian footballer took full responsibility for his actions, which date back two years, in a post on social media. In a frank and detailed speech to the public, Schjelderup tried to explain the circumstances that led to this, stressing that it was a reckless and wrong move.
