The most expensive thing Cristiano Ronaldo has bought costs 50 million: I need
Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has just bought a private jet that costs 50 million – not for excessive luxury or desire, but because for him it is a need: “I need it, I am not normal”. Otherwise, the 40-year-old Portuguese champion would never have spent that much, as he is very careful not to waste his money – which is still a lot, even too much. A few days ago, Ronaldo was certified by Bloomberg as the first billionaire footballer, but he explains – in the interview with his friend Piers Morgan – that he had been like that for a long time and knew it well.

"It's not true, I've been a billionaire for many years. How do I know? Well, I know my money, you have to take care of your things. It's normal. I'm not one to look at the details, but I have people around me who help me do the right things in every area; for finances I have a person with whom I talk almost every day, about my structure, investments, opportunities. And I keep control, because it's my life, it's my money."

"I knew I would become a billionaire"

It is the first time Ronaldo has spoken so openly about himself as a company, which in fact he is, apart from being the deadliest goalscorer in the history of football (952 goals so far between Al Nassr and Portugal, with the legendary figure of 1000 ever closer). "What was the moment when I realised I had become a billionaire? I knew it was going to happen, so I was prepared - he answers with his usual confidence - It was a matter of time. Honestly, I was very happy. It's like when you win the Ballon d'Or because you set yourself your own goals. Everyone has their goals - to build a house, to have a car - and my goal was to reach that number, to tell you the truth."

“I'm not obsessed with money: I think money can help you in many ways, but when you reach a certain level, money doesn't matter anymore, in my opinion. But it's always nice to have more, because we're human. We're never completely happy with what we have. So I was very happy, because it was one of the main objectives I had in mind. Apart from football trophies, the Champions League, the Ballons d'Or, everything. Financially and in business, that was my objective.”

If there's one thing no one can accuse Portuguese star Ronaldo of, it's false modesty. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner isn't afraid to sound cocky when he says, "Being the only billionaire in football doesn't surprise me much, because if you look at the history of football, others can't talk, they can call me whatever they want, but the numbers don't lie. This is something I've always said and I'll keep saying: if you look at a lot of records in football, Cristiano is at the top of the list. So it's another record. So honestly it doesn't surprise me, because I knew my potential in football and outside of football. I knew I would reach that number for many reasons."

Ronaldo then reinforces the concept: "I mean, everything is related to my performances. That was my strategy a few years ago: I told myself, if you keep being at the top, that number will reach you, because everything is related to that. That was my plan. If you ask me if I thought I would reach it so quickly, I would probably say no, but I knew I would reach it."

At that moment Piers Morgan jokes about the great value of the watch that Ronaldo wears on his left hand, but Cristiano explains that he didn't spend all that money... "It's a gift, I can't say no. I have a sponsorship relationship with Jacob (luxury watch brand), so I didn't buy it with my own money. I have the sponsor."

Ronaldo and his private jet: "For me, it's a necessity, not a luxury"

The private jet, no, it wasn't a gift. Cristiano bought it himself, putting his hand in his pocket, but only because he is 'forced' to do so, since he travels a lot and can't literally set foot in an airport or board a scheduled plane like all 'normal' people: "What's the most expensive thing I've ever bought? A plane. I've had my private jet since I was 30, but I changed it a year ago. Now I have a Global Express, after 10 years I changed it for a better one."

At the beginning of 2025, Ronaldo replaced the Gulfstream G200 with a Bombardier BD-700-1A10 Global Express XRS, worth around 50 million euros. Cristiano spared no expense on the additional options, nor on the livery of the aircraft, which is clearly embossed with his CR7 logo and a silhouette reminiscent of his famous celebration: “But now I am at a point in my life where I am no longer interested in material things – reiterates the champion from Madeira – My dreams have already come true; when I was young, I loved driving cars and having all those things, I no longer have that passion”.

“I only have the plane because I need it, because I’m not a normal person. I can’t stand to be in airports. I buy it for that reason. Of course, it helps me, it gives me convenience. But I don’t ask for it anymore. I just want to be happy, to enjoy life. As Carl Jung says, after the age of 40 is the moment when you really know and start living life. This is what I’m starting to feel: for me, money is a good thing, but it’s not important anymore.”

By quoting the Swiss psychoanalyst and philosopher, Cristiano hints that now that he has passed that age, he is ready for new chapters in his life – no less fruitful and successful. And after hearing the extraordinary confidence with which he speaks about himself, it can be safely said that that billion will not remain the only one...
