Last December he was declared world champion, while now, his career takes a very strong blow. Alejandro Gomez is suspended for two years from playing football. The former Sevilla player tested positive for a banned substance in a test carried out in November 2022, a few days before the World Cup, which he played in Qatar, lifting the trophy.
Gomez played in two matches, against Saudi Arabia and Australia with a total of 107 minutes. It all happened during a Sevilla training session when doctors unexpectedly arrived to carry out an anti-doping test.
According to the footballer's version, days ago he had a bad night, which made him consume the syrup of one of his children without consulting the doctors of the Spanish club.
The player and Sevilla had been aware of the matter for months when he received the notice from UEFA, although he was only handed the two-year ban this week. This very aspect was an obstacle to finding a team for Gomez in the summer, as no club wanted to take any chances in the face of this potential yet undecided punishment.
This situation led the parties to agree to terminate the player's contract, which expired in 2024. The Argentine signed with Monza in Serie A, but the Italian experience did not go well. Now, apart from a reduction of the suspension, Gomez risks remaining out of the fields for a long time and seriously thinking about withdrawing from the sport.
