The injury against Uruguay has cost Neymar dearly. The Brazilian striker will end the current season in the infirmary, as the injury in his left knee needs surgery. The 31-year-old suffered torn ligaments and it will take at least 6 to 7 months to recover.

Neymar, who signed for Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in August, left the pitch on a stretcher. Damage that also costs FIFA, since a year outside the fields in international matches is worth about 7.5 million Euros for its coffers. Neymar's career has been extremely difficult, heavily affected by injuries. At the 2014 World Cup, he suffered a back injury in the quarter-final win over Colombia, ruling him out of the 7–1 defeat by Germany.

In Russia 2018, injuries again hampered his dream of winning the World Cup. Earlier that year, Neymar suffered a sprained right ankle that affected his fifth toe. He missed 16 games for Paris St Germain at the end of the 2017-18 campaign as he was out of form after playing in pain for Brazil in Russia until they were knocked out by Belgium in the quarter-finals. The striker suffered similar injuries in 2019, 2021 and last year's World Cup in Qatar. Earlier this year, he underwent surgery on his right ankle that required five months of recovery, before leaving PSG to sign a two-year deal with Al-Hilal.
