We are in the heart of the Italian Alps, navigating the exhilarating Class III rapids of the Adda River, whose bed runs through the picturesque Lombardy region of northern Italy. Originating in the Alpine peaks near the Swiss border, this majestic river stretches eastward for about 313 kilometers before joining the Po River. Along its course, it winds through the enchanting Valtellina region, forming the stunning Lake Como. It is in this valley drowned by greenery that the most important event of the year is being held: the World Rafting Championship 2023!
Thanks to the abundant snowfall from last winter, the Adda River boasts an impressive water flow, providing an ideal challenge for over 400 athletes and technicians from 32 countries around the world. The championship will run from June 26 to July 2 and the stakes are high as participants compete for the prestigious title of World Champions.
Athletes will compete in different categories, including Downriver, Slalom and Head-to-Head (RX): a race in which two teams race simultaneously on the same section of river to ensure victory.
This year, the race introduces larger Aquadesign boats, responding to the growing number of participants. During the accreditation process, several new countries joined our rafting movement, expressing their enthusiasm for this inclusive sport. Italy, India, Costa Rica, Japan and Brazil, the first teams to arrive, followed by Kosovo, Albania, Argentina, Armenia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Georgia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Macedonia of the North, Malta, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Serbia, Slovakia, Turkey and Ukraine. We also have the participation of three African countries - Morocco, Senegal and Uganda - the real novelty of this championship.
The athletes had their first official training session yesterday afternoon, exploring the rapids and familiarizing themselves with the challenging river.
Today at 13:00 the qualifying for the RX races starts, which can be followed live here.
A variety of entertainment awaits spectators throughout the week, including the parade held yesterday of the teams starting from PiazzaTeresina Tua Quadrio, culminating in the lively city center led by the Albosaggia and Ardenno gangs. Strong heartbeats during the races but also celebrations with various performances by local artists and DJs everywhere in the valley.
One of the highlights of the event is the thrilling night descent along the Mallero River. Benedetto Del Zoppo, host of the World Cup as president of the Italian Rafting Federation, explains that the river will be lit up for this fascinating descent.
The World Rafting Federation has created a space dedicated to the "Peace and Sport" project by the "Organisation for Peace through Sport", an independent organization based in the Principality of Monaco and sponsored by Prince Albert II. This project aims to promote peace through sport and all athletes will participate by symbolically displaying a white sheet.
The commitment of our athletes to environmental sustainability is nothing new, but OneTreePlanted has been able to develop this potential to the maximum. The World Rafting Federation, on the occasion of the World Rafting Championship 2023 - Zero Plastic Competition, has the honor to support the reforestation project - this time in Uganda - planting 1 tree for every athlete participating in the event.
The 2023 World Rafting Championships will go down in history as the largest rafting event ever held worldwide. Taking place in two areas within Valtellina, Sondrio and Piateda-Bofetto, this unique approach ensures a wide impact and brings many benefits to the whole area. DaniloBarmaz, President of the World Rafting Federation, emphasizes the role of the championship in promoting inclusiveness and engagement with sports and recreational activities by raising awareness among young people and the local community about environmental protection and nature conservation.
As in any world championship, there are teams that have been mainstays in the movement for decades, and there are teams that are making their debut as the Kosovo Kayaking Federation. The presence of old and new teams will create opportunities for many surprises.
We are very happy to welcome you all in this unique atmosphere of solidarity and friendship, where differences dissolve in the face of passion for the river.
Rafting is not just a sport, but an opportunity to bring people together and the World Rafting Federation wishes everyone the best of luck!
