Facing Italy, Sylvinho: Luckily it's not Mancini. Why Albania is not a
Sylvinho with Mancini at Inter

The coach of the National Team, Sylvinho, in an interview for Corriere della Sera, spoke not only about the challenge with Italy on Saturday, but also about the relationship with Roberto Mancini, once his assistant at Inter and about the importance of some of the players of the National Team.

Sylvinho was a defender of Arsenal and Barcelona, with whom he won two Champions League titles. Then at City the meeting with Roberto Mancini was decisive for the second part of his career. On Saturday, the coach challenges the Azzurri and a part of his past.

"During the draw I thought, fortunately he is not on the bench (laughs). Playing against him would be weird. Anyway, with or without Mancini, it will be difficult for us. As a Brazilian, Italy made me cry in 1982 with Paulo Rossi, but I love it very much."

How did your relationship with Mancini begin?

I was ready to leave. He came in December, he asked me for advice even though I haven't played much. At the end of the season, he asked me to stay on the staff, he saw in me the right characteristics for this job. But I wasn't ready, I wanted to go back to Brazil and he understood. In December 2014, however, he called me to Inter and I came to Milan.

What did you get from Mancini?

I got a lot, he is a great manager, he knows the players, he has personality, leadership, calmness. I just hope I gave something to him.

You had many other teachers, from Wenger to Tite, through Rijkaard and Guardiola. Are they an asset?

I told myself that if I don't become a good coach with these teachers, it's only my fault! I learned to take something from everyone, without losing my essence.

Wenger's lesson?

He was number one for management, which went far beyond the team: very intelligent and, a particularly important detail, very kind.

Guardiola and Rijkaard?

Pep sees where you can't, he has total intelligence, he plays amazing football and few underline how well his teams defend. Frank is closer to the players: thanks to that we won the Champions League.

You won the qualifiers but were drawn in a group with Italy, Spain and Croatia, how did you feel?

We didn't get the draw badly, we want to play against the best. We are a new representative, this is the second time we participate in a European, after 2016 with De Bias. We have grown a lot, but we still have more to learn. We must use this moment responsibly, we are charged.

Are Italy favorites on Saturday?

It is right that it should be like that, but football is crazy, anything can happen.

Albania is not a national team like the others. Why?

There are about 3 million Albanians in Albania and there are tens of millions of Albanians around the world. Looking for players is a difficult, but also stimulating job. Through scouting we found players in Korea, Turkey, Denmark. We watch a lot of videos and when it's time to choose a lot on the spot. Pretty much like clubs do.

Is Italian football culture important to you?

A lot. I myself made a five-year trip to Coverciano with Ulivieri. And many players have trained with Italy, gaining tactical, technical and athletic skills. And the European Championship is also the result of the legacy left by Reja and Panucci as coaches.

Albanians with dual passports always choose the red and black jersey: can this make a difference?

Yes, there is a unique sense of belonging: these players play for their grandfathers, fathers, mothers. In the dressing room, when they dance to Albanian music, their love for their roots explodes. It is beautiful.

What do you expect from Italy?

Spalletti is one of the best, I expect a very organized Italy, tough, strong in transition, very tough in one-on-one situations, with Inter's core playing carefully.

Compared to 2021, Italy has many changes.

It is a natural process. Veterans like Bonucci and Chiellini are missing, but Italy have experience, skill, possession, competitive spirit. It's all there. And then there's Barella, who had an incredible season. I expect him to play.

Who would you like to coach?

There is someone I coached: Mancini wanted to let a boy from the youth team play wide on the left, Dimarco.

Is Asllani the technical leader?

He has grown a lot and is strong in the game. He understood that life does not give you anything for free.

Is Gjimshiti the moral leader?

Yes, he had a great season with Atalanta. It gives us the necessary peace of mind.

Did you talk to Mancini?

We will talk after the European.
