Mexico secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, clinching a place in the round of 16 and recording their first success in a knockout match at the World Cup since 1986.

Despite an hour-long delay due to weather, the atmosphere at the legendary Estadio Azteca was electrifying, with the home fans pushing the team to a dominant performance from the opening minutes. The Mexicans created a number of chances, with Raúl Jiménez and Gilberto Mora threatening the opposition goal before the lead came in the 22nd minute.

Julián Quiñones opened the scoring with a fantastic individual move, breaking through from the left wing and beating goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez with a powerful shot at the far post. It was his third goal of the World Cup.

Just after half an hour, Mexico doubled their lead. Raúl Jiménez recovered the ball high up the pitch, combined beautifully with Quiñones and finished off a classy move to make it 2-0.

Ecuador tried to react in the second half with several substitutions, but failed to seriously trouble the Mexican goal. Although Mexico slowed down, they still created chances to extend their lead, with César Montes coming close with a header.

The bitter evening for Ecuador was made worse at the end when Piero Hincapié was sent off after a clash with an opponent, in which he covered his mouth with his hands.

With this success, Mexico also recorded a clean sheet for the fourth consecutive match in this World Cup and continues its march towards the final stages.

In the round of 16, "El Tri" will face the winner of the England - DR Congo match.

Score:
Mexico 2-0 Ecuador
Julián Quiñones 22', Raúl Jiménez 32'
Red card: Piero Hincapié (Ecuador)
