A goalkeeper who, at just 26 years old, already has a special story behind him. He plays for San Lorenzo de Almagro (Argentine First Division) and ended the season with his club without receiving a salary for six months.
Orlando Gill is undoubtedly one of the heroes of Paraguay, who managed to eliminate Germany on penalties in the round of 16 of the World Cup and secure qualification for the 1/8. The goalkeeper of the South American national team distinguished himself by saving two penalties and gave his people a historic qualification. A goalkeeper who, only 26 years old, already has a special story behind him. He plays for San Lorenzo de Almagro (Argentine First Division) and ended the season with his club without receiving a salary for six months. The situation of San Lorenzo, in fact, is quite difficult.
Financially, the Argentine club has a total debt of 67 million dollars, in addition to 96 ongoing legal proceedings. The players hope to see light at the end of the tunnel with the start of the new season, while San Lorenzo, with the new board of directors that has taken office, is trying at all costs to resolve the situation. Despite this, Gill has managed to isolate everything, focusing only on his journey with Paraguay to the World Cup. He is a goalkeeper highly appreciated by all his people and behind him has a special story related to his son.
About three or four years ago, when he was playing for San Lorenzo in Paraguay, Gill faced some health problems with his young son, Lautaro. At that time, the family was going through a very serious economic crisis. They had almost nothing. Thus, his wife Melissa, through a post on Instagram, showed how Orlando Gill, in order to cover the additional medical expenses for their son's health problems, managed to overcome economic difficulties.
"When Laut was born, we had nothing and Orlando was forced to sell all the equipment he had received from the teams he had played for to cover the expenses. Our son fought for his life and his father was always there! He sold everything: the U-20 national team jersey, clothes, sneakers. He literally sold EVERYTHING!", wrote his wife on Instagram after her husband's debut with the Paraguayan national team.
Gill's career up to his World Cup debut with Paraguay
An extraordinary story for a footballer who, after being formed at Club 13 de Junio (2012-2013, where he played as a midfielder) and then at CS San Lorenzo of Paraguay (from 2013), debuted with the first team around 2019-2020 with few appearances in the Primera División of Paraguay. Then came the transfer to Argentina on loan to San Lorenzo de Almagro in December 2023, to then be promoted to the first team and to be finally bought in January 2025 with a contract until December 31, 2027. In between came the debut with the Paraguayan U-20 national team in 2019 and then with the A national team in 2025. Today, after two expected penalties against Germany, there are already those who compare him to José Luis Chilavert. Despite the club's major problems, it continues to dream along with an entire nation, showing pride, passion and professionalism.
