It seemed to be the right time to put an end to the "Marasi" taboo, but this time too, Simone Inzaghi's Inter came back from Genoa only with a draw (2-2).
The Italian champions even found themselves at a disadvantage, but eventually overturned thanks to a brace from Marcus Thuram.
Then a bit of naivety from Bisseck, who to be honest was one of the best on the pitch up to that point, led to the penalty, which resulted in a 2-2 draw from ex-Reds and Blacks player Messias.
But what didn't work for Inter against Genoa?
Somewhat surprisingly, the Swiss goalkeeper has to be mentioned among the worst players in black, even though he has been one of the big positive protagonists in the season of the second star.
There is clearly no room for any alarm, but Sommer was very wrong against Genoa. Vogliacco's first goal, for example, also came because of his indecision. Mistakes that black fans were not used to. The Helvetian goalkeeper then stopped Messias' penalty, before the Brazilian's second winner.
For now, Sommer remains steadfast as a starter between the posts for Inter, but the arrival of Josep Martinez could put pressure on the Swiss No.1. Bisseck also had a slip. The German defender, among the best of the black and white pre-season, was rewarded by Inzaghi with the starting shirt because Pavard is not at his best.
The coach's choice was the one that had paid off, at least until the 93rd minute, when he himself caused a very avoidable penalty by touching the ball with his hand in the middle of the area.
A mistake that Inzaghi underlined at the end of the match: "He played an excellent match, in the end he was not as clear as the first 70 minutes. I wanted to replace him with Pavard, but when we doubled the lead I preferred to keep him on the field, because Genoa was playing tall and I would have lost a few centimeters".
Before the match, Marotta reassured Inzaghi and the fans by promising reinforcements at the back. And in fact, something behind this Inter seems to be missing. Also because De Vrij was not there against Genoa, injured, while Acerbi is still not in optimal condition after the operation he performed in June for groin pain.
At the end of the match, it was Bastoni himself who underlined the need for an additional reinforcement at the back: "It seems clear that I need an assistant, because you can't keep your form without a minute of rest. Then we don't know when the new season will end. The Club World Cup maximizes the season's matches, so two players are needed for each position."
And then there is him, one of Inzaghi's loyalists, the man the coach never gives up on in midfield. Against Genoa, however, Mkhitaryan, perhaps due to the workload, appeared unclear, as did his team-mate Calhanoglu.
The activation of Frattesi as a substitute gave the greatest vitality to the black and white midfield, without forgetting that it was the former Sassuolo player who provided the assist for Thuram's temporary 1-2. However, in attack, Lautaro Martinez struggled, still clearly in poor condition after his summer strain at the Copa America with Argentina.
No alarms, of course, it's only mid-August. But, to return to the "high flights", Inter need the real "Toro" as soon as possible.
