Allegri zero titles: For a century, no coach has survived at Juventus without
Massimiliano Allegri

Massimiliano Allegri returned to Juventus as the third coach with the most trophies brought to the white and white showcase: 11, including Serie A titles (5), Italian Super Cup (2) and Coppa Italia (4). He ranked behind only Trapattoni (14 trophies) and Lippi (13). He returned with the intention of overcoming them.

Two seasons later, not only has he not passed them, not only has he not reached them, but he's still there. Zero titles, unlike his predecessors Sarri (Champion title) and Pirlo (Italian Cup and Super Cup). Beyond simply noting the evidence, it is the consultation of the scriptures that helps draw conclusions.

The annals of the history of the "Old Lady" point to a house rule, unwritten, but crystallized from practice: two seasons without trophies at Juve are synonymous with farewell to the coach. More specifically, only once in the history of Juventus has there been a coach who has not won for two seasons (zero title) and then remained on the white bench for the third. This happened a century ago.

MORE THAN TWO SEASONS – Before Allegri, the list of coaches who were in charge of Juventus for more than two years (seasons) includes Conte (2011-14), Lippi (1994-99 and 2001-05), Trapattoni (1976- 86 and 1991-94), Vycpalek (1971-74), Herrera (1964-69), Borel (1942-46), Rosetta (1935-39), Carcano (1930-35) and Karoly (1923-26).

All capable of winning a trophy, even returnees such as Trapattoni and Lippi have also had success in their comebacks. All but Felice Borel (three black and white titles and world champion with the 1934 national team as a player).

The presence of his name is misleading, because he was in charge of Juventus as a player-coach for four years, but in reality due to the war there were only two championships (1942-43 and 1945-46, both times runners-up to Torino), with a two-year suspension in the middle of the war. Two seasons without a trophy and Juve changed, in that case relying on Renato Cesarini.

THE ONLY PRECEDENT – However, there is actually a coach who stayed on the Juventus bench for a third season after winning nothing in the first two. And here we must return to the fog of a century ago (or almost). To be precise, let's go back to the first professional coach in the history of Juventus: the Hungarian Jeno Karoly.

Coming in charge of the whites from Savona, who had brought him to Italy, he remained winless in 1923-24 (place 5 out of 12 teams in Group B, the title was won by Genoa) and in 1924-25 (place 3 out of 13 teams in Group B, the title was won by Bologna). However, he remained on the Juventus bench in 1925-26.

He should have ended this experience with the championship title, the second in the history of Juventus, if it were not for a tragic turn. Karoly did not experience that championship in the end because he suffered a heart attack just days before the Northern League final was won against Bologna. It was his compatriot Jozsef "Giuseppe" Viola, as player and coach, who led Juventus to the Italian tricolor, the second in the club's history.

NOW - The fact remains that it has never happened since then that Juventus keep a coach for the third season, without winning any trophy in the previous two. It is a club that gives time to its technicians, but at Juventus patience lasts only two seasons. So many seasons have already passed with Allegri returning. To stay, if we refer to the history of Juventus, he needs an exception to the rule….
