December 18 is a date marked with a red circle on the calendar by Luka Modric. It's the day his grandfather, whose name was Luka, passed away as a Real Madrid midfielder. This date coincides with the World Cup final in Qatar.

A meeting expected by all of Croatia and that would have a special flavor for the former Golden Ball player. On December 18, 1990, his family experienced the tragedy of his grandfather's murder, killed by Serbian rebels. The killing took place in front of the Modric family home on the slopes of Mount Veleb in the north of the country and at the height of Croatia's war for independence, which began in 1991 and lasted until 1995.

"I still remember my grandfather well. He was my protector. I have the same name as him. I'm sad that I can't see everything I've achieved," said the Croatian midfielder during the documentary film Captains, produced by FIFA.

“But he's definitely up there watching me and cheering for me. I know he will be proud. I didn't know what happened when they brought him home. The only thing I felt was sadness. My father hugged me and led me to the coffin and said: 'Son, go say goodbye to your grandfather.'

I couldn't fathom that it was the last time I would see him. My parents took me out of the room, they wanted to get me away from the tragedy. It hurts my heart every time I think about it," recalled Modric, who is looking forward to the December 18 final more than any other Croatian.
