Was Ymer Pampuri an Olympic Champion? The journalist ends the debate: He came

The first Olympic medal received by Albanian athletes in Paris 2024 included in the debate Prime Minister Edi Rama and his predecessor, Sali Berisha, about whether or not this was the first medal in an Olympic competition.

After receiving the bronze medal from the Russian from Ossetia who represented Albania, Cherman Valiev, in wrestling, Prime Minister Rama said that this is the first Olympic medal that Albania receives thanks to the already reborn sport.

"The first Olympic medal in our history is a news that speaks volumes for the work of the reborn Albanian Olympic Committee under the leadership of Fidel Ylli; for the truth that sports talents born here no longer run away from Albania, but talents born elsewhere choose it as their second homeland to train in optimal conditions and climb to the top of the world with the red and black flag; as well as for the beginning of a new story, which in years will bring other joyful fruits thanks to the massive sports movement for children and the massive investments in gyms and sports infrastructure that will continue", wrote Rama.

But the reaction of former Prime Minister Berisha was also immediate, who, while congratulating Valiev's bronze medal, emphasized that, in fact, Albania's first medal was won in weightlifting in Munich in 1972 by Ymer Pampuri.

"The head of the fraud pyramid Edi Rama presented Valiev's Olympic medal as the first medal in the country's history. Someone should remind this man who sells ignorance, disgust and lies from morning to dinner that the legendary weightlifter, Ymer Pampuri, returned from the 1972 Munich Olympics with a gold medal!", wrote Berisha.

Rama responded to Berisha's statements this morning. "Ymer Pampuri made a tremendous success by coming first in the strength style (at that time there were three styles of weightlifting competition), but ninth in the classification of the Munich Olympic competition, as a result of the much lower result in the three styles combined. Ymer Pampuri's medal is not an Olympic medal, but it is the gold medal in the corresponding style in the world championship that year was played in parallel in the same Olympic competition".

The well-known sports journalist, Besnik Dizdari, also wrote about the 1972 Olympics.

Excerpts from Dizdar's writing:

It was wrong, very badly, in the last month, calling Ymer Pampuri the Olympic Champion! Even as a researcher of these jobs, which often require professional conscience more than any special skill, I say that it was not wrong, but a mistake was made. A historical fault has been made, so much so that an Albanian athlete, who took 9th place at the Munich Olympic Games, continues to be called the Olympic Champion! It happens with Ymer Pampuri, who at the Munich Olympics not only was not Olympic Champion, but was neither Olympic Runner-up nor third place winner (bronze medal). In fact, it is not ranked fourth, nor fifth, nor sixth, nor seventh, nor eighth, but only 9th! And yet they made him Olympic Champion, which is one of the biggest roots in the history of Albanian sports. Because Ymer Pampuri is ranked only 9th in the Olympic Games.

And yes, our other great weightlifter, Dede Dekaj, who is no longer mentioned by anyone, was ranked 9th in the Barcelona Olympics (1992), as well as weightlifter Briken Çalja in "London 2012". Meanwhile, it is well known that better than Ymer Pampuri to date in all the Olympics that Albania has participated in, the following have been ranked consecutively: weightlifter Ilir Suli 5th (Sidney 2000), wrestler Elis Guri 8th (Beijing 2008) and Romela Begaj 6th (Beijing 2008). Which means that at least three other Albanian Olympians have a higher Olympic ranking than Ymer Pampuri in the Olympics: Ilir Suli, Romela Begaj and Elis Guri.

Meanwhile, as it is repeated to the first grader, we are repeating that Pampuri is ranked equally with the other two who, like him, have taken the 9th places in the Olympics (Dede Dekaj and Briken Çalja), together with he ranks fourth among the Albanian participants in the Olympic Games. Without forgetting that Majlinda Kelmendi, for those who know even a little about the Olympic rankings, should also be considered ranked 9th in "London 2012". With this lack of professional conscience, Albanian sports journalism will always remain below the level of other, non-sports journalism.
