An unprecedented earthquake is approaching the German national football team. The first "scapegoat" has become Oliver Bierhoff, who was the first senior official to resign as a result of the second consecutive elimination in the group stage of a World Cup.
As some well-informed German media have claimed, Hansi Flick could also follow in the manager's footsteps and resign.
Through a statement, the coach made it clear that he is not happy with the farewell of Bierhoff, one of his most trusted men in the German organization: "As my coaching staff and I find it difficult at this moment to imagine how we can fills the void created by Oliver's departure, both professionally and personally."
These are words that contradict the first statements that Flick made as soon as he was eliminated from the World Cup. "For me, there is no reason not to continue", said Flick for "ARD".
Bierhoff's resignation seems to have changed everything. "For me, Oliver was my first contact and friend within the team. We had a common goal of the project for "Euro 2024" in Germany", he concluded.
Matthias Sammer, the Borussia Dortmund legend and former Mannschaft sporting director, is already being mentioned as a possible successor to Bierhoff. While Thomas Tuchel is the main candidate to sit on the German bench if Flick eventually resigns.
