Prime Minister Edi Rama has conducted an exclusive interview with Richard Attias, the well-known organizer of FII (Future Investment Initiative), the global platform that after Miami came to Europe for the first time, in Tirana.
Asked if he likes the comparison of Albania to a "new Switzerland", Rama said that he sees the country more as a "new Italy", adding that Albania is a country blessed by God, but cursed by history.
Edi Rama: First of all, what I want to say is that what happened in Tirana was unimaginable not long ago and I want to thank you and your institution for this extraordinary opportunity. I was very surprised when I heard from Mr. Ramayan that this is your first time in Europe. I think this is the best way to approach the very essential issue of joining forces between the public and private sectors, and it is precisely in these kinds of meeting places where people, who come from the field where everything happens, can interact, raise questions, get answers, and even more than that, get in touch with each other.
By the way, we had the opportunity to have the French President here, and as he was leaving, he exchanged contacts with three people. One of them was someone who was doing healthcare through Artificial Intelligence, he was working in London. And the President asked him, 'Why London?' You have to come to Paris. Give me your contact. I'll call you.' So it's extraordinary and absolutely amazing.
Richard Attias: When I am asked about Albania, I don't know if you like the comparison, but I think you are the new Switzerland of Europe. You are firmly in the center of Europe and from a geographical point of view you have every right to be in the center of Europe. Second, culture. Diversity of cultures, diversity of religious beliefs, a peaceful country, a country of tolerance. Why have you been so silent until now? The whole world is now discovering Albania, it is discovering Tirana. 90% of our delegates have been positively surprised by the choice we made and I think it is just the beginning. What do you expect the future of Albania to be like?
Edi Rama: First of all, I was a little scared when you said "New Switzerland", because on the one hand, we - I think - cannot become perfect like a Swiss watch and on the other hand, if we were to become so, then Albania would be boring. I would prefer a "New Italy", where you find opportunities, where you find the pleasure of hospitality, of food, but where you don't lose your smile. God has blessed us, but history has cursed us, a curse where, to be honest, we have also had our contribution for many years and centuries. This country with a very small territory, only 28 thousand square kilometers, where you find two seas, mountains, 9 rivers, lakes, you find a different landscape for every kilometer, is truly a place to visit, a place to stay, a place to invest.
Rama said that work is underway on a project with Italy and the United Arab Emirates to build underwater cables for the transmission of electricity, which will be produced in our country.
Rama: We have a lot to do politically and geographically for energy and we are doing it. Now we are engaged in a larger project with Italy that connects Albania with Italy. There are French companies that have come to build for solar energy. We have currently established the first technological park, so there are many foreign companies that come here. Then we are also good in service, but tourism, energy and innovation are 3 of the directions where we can do much more
There was also a comment about the European Union.
Rama: One of the problems I see in the EU is the difficulty in coming up with a decision. Because there are too many doctors for too many patients who are fighting with each other to find a diagnosis. The EU must think about how to withstand the powers that are emerging.
