As the Democrats waited for a trial date on the ownership of the party, for the Court of Appeals the DP's case was equal to any ordinary citizen, but not to the right.

For them, the appointment of the judge who will decide on the party quarrel is not a victory, but an indication of how far the trial is for the fate of the DP.

With the elections behind closed doors and in the absence of a legal solution, election experts believe that the scenario that the largest opposition party does not register in the elections is the most likely.

"The Democratic Party may not be part of the race" - says the former chairman of the CEC, Kristaq Kume.

The registration of the Democratic Party has turned into a somewhat confusing puzzle as both factions within the DP are expected to have difficulties in completing the documentation that proves who owns the party's logo and seal.

"There is a legal impasse because you are mandated to replace the former party chairman Basha, but a former party chairman who no longer exists. So you are mandated to replace a person who does not have the function of the party. But, meanwhile, we have a deadlock following that Berisha's group is waiting for the court's decision. At this moment we see that both groups cannot be registered" , says Gerta Meta, head of the coalition of local observers.

Under these conditions, the solution is required to be taken by the democrats themselves.

"There is a way to solve the problem, which is the decision-making of the two PD groups to find among themselves the best solution in the interest of the PD membership and all citizens" - Kume adds.

"We hope that the DP in the elections will be registered as a party that would adequately represent the opposition and we will not remain in the frame, even the elections of May 14 will be under the logo of only one party as it was in 2019" , adds Meta.

The dispute over the ownership of the Democratic Party is expected to go through all the judicial channels, but with the election deadlines getting narrower, the first and fastest test is expected to be in the Central Election Commission./ TCH
