The former Minister of Justice Etilda Gjonaj has reacted regarding the suicide of a 41-year-old mother in Durrës, who is suspected of being physically and psychologically abused by her husband and other people, as well as being denigrated on social networks.
Gjonaj calls for greater attention regarding the risks brought by technology and social networks and says that psychological violence should be included as a separate criminal offense in the Criminal Code.
Full message:
The serious incident that happened to a woman and mother of 4 children in Durrës, is an alarm bell for all of us! A psychological violence systematically applied to a woman, who, due to her culture and mentality, found herself under the pressure of denigrating attacks, causing fatal consequences for her life.
There are many victims of psychological violence in social networks, through uncontrolled derogatory comments, in violation of dignity and hate speech, and they are also considered victims of violence against women. And just as vulnerable are children and young people, who access technology and social networks in an uncontrolled manner.
And for this, we must take urgent measures to prevent other victims of violence against women, to prevent and punish cases of violence against women, both physical and psychological or economic, fighting against the sometimes patriarchal mentality and culture as well as well as by taking measures against the consequences brought about by the development of technology and social networks in an uncontrolled manner.
PSYCHOLOGICAL VIOLENCE must be included as a separate criminal offense in the Criminal Code, and we lawmakers must take urgent measures to amend the Criminal Code, and more than toughen it, there is a need to address new criminal offenses for violence against women for to respond to new developments in society and in accordance with the recommendations of GREVIO and other international organizations.
It is time to respond prepared to the risks brought by technological development and what is considered cybercrime, through preventive legislative measures to control and prohibit hateful and derogatory language in violation of human dignity in social networks, as well as through unreserved adherence also in the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime as well as in accordance with international conventions and resolutions.
Just as it is time for the ONLINE MEDIA itself to take measures to control and stop all comments, which constitute hate speech, violate the integrity, human dignity and personal life of every person.
I invite the justice bodies to carry out in-depth investigations into this event and to bring to justice not only the perpetrators who caused this tragedy, but also the state institutions if they did not take the appropriate measures to prevent it.
I express my condolences to the family!
