He was punched before the protest, Berisha for "BILD": It is time for
Sali Berisha

The German daily "BILD" has published an article on what happened yesterday in Tirana, where the democratic leader Sali Berisha was punched by 31-year-old Gert Shehu, before the protest, while at the same time the EU summit was being held with Western Balkans.

She received a short statement from Berisha, who once blamed the government's number one, Edi Rama, calling the attack not personal, but against the entire opposition in Albania. Likewise, Berishaa added that the latest event should show the international community how dangerous Rama is.

BILD article :

The country in the Balkans is considered a mafia state and wants to join the EU. Yesterday's summit of the Western Balkans in the Albanian capital of Tirana addressed the EU membership of countries such as Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Serbia. The head of the Albanian opposition Sali Berisha (78 years old, Democratic Party) led a demonstration near the Summit. All of a sudden, the first President of Albania was attacked by a bandit and hit in the face. Immediately the bodyguards addressed the attacker, beating him.

For BILD, Berisha said: It was not only an attack on me, but on the entire opposition in Albania. It can hardly be a coincidence that a thug is sent against me while the German chancellor is meeting with the head of our mafia government in Tirana. It is time for the EU to understand how dangerous Edi Rama is.

Berisha earlier claimed that the attacker was a known criminal police informant. For years, Berisha, who led his country out of stone-age Albanian communism in 1990 and became the country's first non-communist president in 1992. Violent protests continue in Albania. Berisha and Rama continue to accuse each other of corruption. Berisha considers Rama responsible, among other things, for the fact that Albania is already considered one of the most important centers of drug trafficking in Europe. In addition, Berisha accuses Rama that the socialists buy votes in the elections with the help of the mafia. Rama, who was also in close contact with young CDU MPs in Germany, denies this.

Rama replaced Berisha as prime minister in 2013, as he held the post of prime minister since 2005. Until 2013, he was also the leader of the Democratic Party (PD). After an electoral defeat by Rama's socialists, Berisha resigned from the leadership of the party. In May of this year, he returned to the leadership of the party after overthrowing his successor and political student Lulzim Basha (48 years old). Basha was considered very pro-government by Berisha and other influential democrats.

Berisha continues to accuse Rama of having influenced his placement on the US blacklist.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) constantly confirms that Albania has serious deficits in elections, the fight against corruption and democratization.
