The former leader of the DP, Lulzim Basha, participated in the meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, where the latest tensions between Kosovo and Serbia were discussed.
Basha made a direct appeal to the 5 EU countries that do not yet recognize Kosovo. In the face of Russian aggression against Ukraine, Basha has asked them to recognize Kosovo's independence, as the war is a 'bell' that shows that priority should now be given to the peace and stability of Europe. According to Basha, by becoming part of the union, the Western Balkans also brings a stronger EU.
"I also have a call for the member states of the European Union that have not yet recognized Kosovo. 15 years after its independence and one year after Russia's aggression in Ukraine, it is time to put peace and stability first, our peace and stability, Europe's peace and stability. Kosovo is a "sui generis" case, and it would be a grave mistake for any country to draw parallels with other situations. What is happening today in Ukraine is a bell ringing for each of us to look beyond today's interests.
A Western Balkans in NATO, a Western Balkans in the EU means a stronger, safer and more prosperous Europe", said Basha.
Focusing on the tensions between Kosovo and Serbia, Basha thanked the USA and the EU for the willingness they have shown to reach an agreement between the two countries. He emphasized that the sooner Serbia recognizes Kosovo's independence, the better it will be for the future of the entire region, but also for Albanians and Serbs. Basha also called for Kosovo to become part of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
"Independent Kosovo is an irreversible reality in the heart of Europe. The sooner this reality is embraced by everyone, including Serbia, the better it will be, first of all, for the citizens of Kosovo, both Serbs and Albanians, the better it will be for the future of the whole our region, to focus our efforts and vision to ensure a better life for our youth in our countries. Unfortunately, as recent events show, even today some still think that nationalist rhetoric will help them hold on to power forever. Others find it difficult to part with the bloody past. However, these dilemmas cannot hold the future of the region hostage. They should not hold Serbia's European future hostage.
If the representatives of Serbia here today are concerned about the rights of the Kosovo Serb minority, then let us join our efforts together and welcome Kosovo as a member of the Council of Europe, allowing for the full protection of human rights and the rights of minorities that this honorable institution offers to all its members", said Basha.
In the end, Basha closed with a congratulation for the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, who celebrates his birthday today.
"Let me conclude, Madam President, by wishing President Zelensky today: Happy Birthday, wishing him strength and prosperity, and thanking him for his leadership. Slava Ukraine" , said Basha.
