Stano: I am personally in favor of the lifting of sanctions against Kosovo,
Peter Stano

The spokesperson of the EU for Foreign Policy, Peter Stano, has stated that he does not support the measures imposed on Kosovo.

He said that the lifting of these sanctions is possible and that he personally supports them. But, this attitude seems not to be shared by the entire EU.

At the press conference, Stano said that the parties must return to dialogue and that there is no other way.

The emissary of the European Union stated that the member states have not yet seen enough steps from Kosovo for "a meaningful de-escalation", and this is the reason why the measures are still in force.

Regarding the terrorist attack in Banjska on September 24, Stano said that the EU expects a full and final investigation of the events and has also called on Serbia to cooperate unconditionally.

"The measures introduced for Kosovo were a direct reaction to the escalation that took place, or the lack of de-escalation that we saw earlier, I'm not talking about September 24, I'm talking about the period before that. The member states have not yet seen enough steps from Kosovo for meaningful de-escalation, therefore the measures are still in force. As for dialogue, there is no other way but to return to dialogue. The road to the EU for Kosovo and Serbia inevitably goes through the dialogue mediated by the EU, there is no other way", declared Stano.

He stated that from the beginning it was said that the measures can be imposed on both parties and also that the measures are flexible and can be removed if deemed necessary.

As for the investigation into the attack in Banjska where police sergeant Afrim Bunjaku died and three other Kosovo policemen were injured, Stano said that they are waiting for the final result of the investigation.

"We await the final result of the full investigation. When the investigations are finished, and the EU has the results, and has a clear picture of what happened and who is behind this, then the member states will decide on other steps", said Stano.

"We must see reasonable steps towards meaningful de-escalation, a return to dialogue, and when it comes to the events of September 24, a complete and final investigation. As for the conditions for returning to the dialogue, the EU and the international partners have been clear, the dialogue must continue, both parties must return to the dialogue", he declared.

When asked who Serbia should cooperate with for the investigation, Stano said that "they expect full and unconditional cooperation from Serbia".

"How it will do this, it remains for Serbia to decide. There are many possible paths. Our partners in Serbia know what they need and what they are expected to do", said Stano.

The emissary of the European Union for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajçak, said last week that he supports the lifting of the measures against Kosovo imposed by the EU.
