Russian espionage in Albania, US Intelligence Committee Senator's
Mike Turner and Edi Rama

The head of the Permanent Committee on Intelligent Services in the U.S. Senate, Mike Turner, visited Albania on Wednesday.

Turner, who also holds the post of deputy chairman of the Defence and Security Committee at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, met with Prime Minister Edi Rama, Defence Minister Niko Peleshi, Chief of Staff, Arben Kingji and Deputies Mimi Kodheli and Jorida Tabaku.

Turner's visit to Albania arrives days after the arrest of two Russian citizens and a Ukrainian, who are being tried on espionage charges in the country.

The very profile of the meetings the senator has held, but also the development of this visit out of the public attention implies that this issue has been discussed with the Albanian authorities.

As far as investigations into the Russians are concerned, the Tirana court has imposed prison arrest on detainees. The prosecution said there is evidence to raise the reasonable belief that their activity in Albania was not for tourism, but for espionage.

The prosecution said that because of the nature of the evidence, it does not make them public.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Edi Rama has called it ridiculous to think that the Russians and Ukrainians were doing espionage at the Gramsh Plant. He said this plant has been declassified since 2012, but added that the real intentions of the detainees should be investigated.
