US: Albania is supporting war crimes investigations in Ukraine

The United States of America states that Albania is supporting war crimes investigations in Ukraine, along with the European Union and other partner countries of the West.

"President Biden and Secretary Blinchen have condemned the clear war crimes that members of Russian forces have committed in Ukraine. The United States, Albania, the European Union and our allies and partners are tracking and documenting atrocities in Ukraine so that we can share information with working institutions to seek accountability from those responsible for their actions. Together with Albania, the United States is supporting a series of international investigations into atrocities in Ukraine. These include those carried out by the International Criminal Court, the United Nations and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). We are also supporting civil society and NGOs documenting human rights violations,"said in a statement distributed by the US Embassy in Tirana.

On May 17, the U.S. State Department launched a new Conflict Observatory to collect, analyze and widely make available evidence of war crimes and other atrocities committed by Russia in Ukraine.

The program aims to support possible prosecutions in Ukraine's local courts, courts in countries that are third parties, U.S. courts and other important courts. At the request of Ukraine's Attorney General, the US is also supporting a team of international prosecutors and war crimes experts, who are offering advice and support for efforts by Ukrainian authorities to similarly collect, preserve and analyze evidence for war crimes in Ukraine.
