The EU delegation in Tirana and the American Embassy have rejected the statements made by the head of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha.

According to Lulzim Basha, internationals have been involved in mediating between the parties to convince the SP to reach an agreement on the Electoral Reform.

The EU delegation and the American embassy state that they have not mediated for the Electoral Reform.

EU reaction

" In response to the reports circulating in the media, we would like to clarify that while the EU is not involved in any mediation, our position remains the same: we continue to emphasize the need to follow the recommendations of the OSCE/ODIHR.

As we have said before, including in the 2023 Report for Albania, the electoral reform requires constructive and comprehensive political dialogue of all parties , says the reaction.

The reaction of the US embassy

As part of our normal diplomatic engagement with members of parliament, the US Embassy meets regularly with chairs, co-chairs, and members of various parliamentary committees, including the Commission on Electoral Reform. Meetings are not part of any mediation.

Our interest remains in effective and representative governance to implement ODIHR's recommendations and we welcome the ideas of all responsible parties for this purpose, the US embassy says .

Lulzim Basha's statement

The head of the Democratic Party, the day before (January 16), in a statement to the media, stated that the Democratic Party "in cooperation with the strategic allies of Albania, the Democratic Party has succeeded in convincing the other party to start work on the electoral reform".
