A total of 305 amendments have been requested by a group of Members of the European Parliament, regarding the 2025 draft report on Albania, as they view with concern the polarized climate in our country's Parliament.
Thus, among the many amendments, those related to the climate in Parliament as well as Justice Reform, the issue of former Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku, or the opposition protests stand out.
"Expresses concern about the ongoing political polarization and confrontational political discourse, which undermine parliamentary oversight, public trust and the effective functioning of democratic institutions; recalls that violent protests have no place in a functioning democracy," said the rapporteur for Albania, Andreas Schieder, and 5 other MEPs, Adnan Dibrani, Tonino Picula, Matjaž Nemec, Thijs Reuten, Marco Tarquinio, in amendment number 84.
Meanwhile, Amendment 114, also according to Schieder, emphasizes that corruption remains a serious concern and, despite progress in the legal and institutional framework, "Albania should further consolidate the track record of investigations, prosecutions and final convictions, especially in cases of high-level corruption; welcomes the adoption of key anti-corruption laws, including whistleblower protection and conflict of interest, and calls for their full implementation."
Among other things, amendment 253 by Andreas Schieder, “congratulates Albania on its full compliance with the EU's common foreign and security policy, including restrictive measures, continued engagement in CSDP missions and operations, and constructive role in promoting regional stability; welcomes enhanced cooperation on security and defence through the EU-Albania Security and Defence Partnership”.
Meanwhile, in amendment 111, MEP Ivaylo Valchev emphasizes that corruption remains a serious concern and that, despite progress in the legal and institutional framework, Albania must further consolidate the results of investigations, prosecutions and final convictions, especially in cases of high-level corruption.
"I regret the decision of the Speaker of the Assembly to postpone the parliamentary vote on the lifting of the immunity of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Belinda Balluku, and recall that this decision is arbitrary and without legal basis; I call on the Assembly to address the issue of lifting the immunity of Deputy Prime Minister Balluku without delay," says Valchev.
We recall that on February 26, the draft report on Albania's progress on its journey towards the union was presented to the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee.
