Prime Minister Edi Rama has stated that Albania's defense budget has exceeded the basic defense spending target set by NATO for alliance member countries.

Rama made the comments during a speech on his podcast 'Flasim', where he said that defense spending in Albania has exceeded 2% of Gross Domestic Product.

The Chief Executive also added that the 2026 budget is the most serious defense budget for Albania.

“ The Minister of Defense announced at a conference this week many details regarding the defense budget for 2026, which has exceeded the basic defense spending objective, going above 2% of gross domestic product, that is, above the NATO standard threshold, which is also the standard threshold for all member countries. This level of spending shows, not simply a figure that is higher than the threshold, nor a simple commitment to spend, but also shows a proactive approach to our obligations, not only internationally, but also to develop a new defense industry.

It is the budget with the most serious investment in defense historically and these financing dimensions, the financing structure, speak of the beginning of a long-term strategic turn, which is no longer limited to the purchase of equipment or simply to modernization through purchases, but aims to build sustainable military and industrial capacities here in the country and this approach is related to a local base of the defense industry, it is related to investments in production, not only for domestic needs, but also for export, it is related to technology transfer and maintenance and is related in the last instance to that tangible necessity, which we can now address, because we have created the opportunities. It is another Albania with other powers to make it possible for the state in the defense sector, not just to spend, so, not only to spend, but also to earn and by earning to reinvest. And by investing and reinvesting, to also increase the opportunities for quality, well-paid employment , "said Rama, among other things.
