Slovenian President, letter to the President of the European Council: Albania
President of Slovenia Borut Pahor

Through a letter sent to the President of the European Council, the President of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, has asked the European Union to lift the visa regime for the citizens of Kosovo at the June 23 summit.

The Slovenian President made the request through a letter sent to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, while confirming its submission today in his speech at the Prespa Forum.

Pahor said he urged the EU to take decisions to speed up the integration of the six Western Balkan states.

"I believe that concrete steps are needed to accelerate the enlargement of the European Union in the Western Balkans. Albania and Northern Macedonia should be given the green light to start negotiations in June and Kosovo to receive visa liberalization. I believe that both require only the political will of the member states, as all three states meet all the conditions to say. "I also want a faster negotiation process with Montenegro and Serbia," Pahor wrote, according to media reports in Sarajevo.

He expressed particular concern about the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"I am convinced that it is necessary for Bosnia and Herzegovina to be granted unconditional candidate status. Of course, BiH has to meet the conditions, but the order has to be different - so first the candidate status and then the conditions. "In my opinion, this would strengthen the pro-European forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the dynamics of internal adaptation to European norms," Pahor wrote.

The full letter of the Slovenian President:
"In light of the Russian Federation's aggression against Ukraine and the effects of the war on European security are growing, reaffirm the importance of the European Union as a guarantor of security and stability. While I sincerely support all efforts to give Ukraine and Moldova candidate status, but I am increasingly concerned about the situation in the Western Balkans, to which we are constantly declaring European guarantees, perspective, but the group is always leaving and more.

I am particularly concerned about the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this country, the negative consequences and the very slow process of enlargement of the European Union and departure from the European perspective. In these circumstances, nationalism and the struggle for border change are intensifying, all of which are leading to growing instability that threatens the security not only of BiH and its close neighbor, but also of the European Union.

I am convinced that it is necessary for Bosnia and Herzegovina to be granted unconditional candidate status. Of course, BiH has to meet the conditions, but the order has to be different - so first the candidate status and then the conditions. In my opinion, this would strengthen the pro-European forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the dynamics of internal adaptation to European norms.
