The star of 'Big Brother VIP Albania 2', Luiz Ejlli supported the SP candidates in Tirana and Shkodër, giving a strong boost to the socialist campaign on social networks during the closing week of the May 14 local elections.

Before the closing of the final night of the TV show 'Big Brother VIP Albania 2', the host Arbana Osmani announced that the 'big brother' had prepared a last surprise for the singer Luiz Ejlli, who was announced as the winner of this edition that lasted for 133 day.

Dressed in a black suit and white shirt, the singer headed to the terrace of Tirana's town hall, where, among invited family and friends, he crowned his relationship with the TV presenter, Kiara Tito, getting married in a ceremony led by the mayor and socialist candidate for the municipality of Tirana, Erion Veliaj.

The wedding ceremony, part of the show with the largest audience during this television season, was also broadcast live on the Veliajt page on the Facebook social network.

"LIVE from the terrace of the City Hall of Tirana????, to crown the love of Kiara and Luiz????‍❤‍????‍????," wrote Veliaj.

Luiz and Kiara's wedding video has received 472,714 views and generated nearly 24,000 likes, shares, emojis and comments, becoming the post with the highest audience engagement of the 2014 election campaign May.

Data analyzed by BIRN through the 'Crowdtangle' application show that the mayoral candidates in the May 14 local elections, party leaders and district political leaders widely used social networks to communicate with voters and broadcast propaganda materials.

In total, the mayoral candidates made nearly 9,000 posts in the 4 weeks of the campaign, generating more than 32.8 million video views and 6.3 million interactions with Facebook followers.

An important role during this campaign was played by the three main political leaders - Edi Rama, Sali Berisha and Ilir Meta, who recorded a total of 18 million views and 3 million interactions.

Meanwhile, the 18 political leaders of the districts, not including the Tirana district where the candidates for the municipality were also the political leaders of the district, recorded 6.7 million video views and almost 2 million interactions on 'Facebook'.

Crowdtangle is an application from the company Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram, that enables the analysis of data from public pages in social networks.

A total of 40 parties and coalitions with 144 candidates for mayors and about 23,700 candidates for city councilors competed in the May 14 elections. Through Crowdtangle, BIRN monitored the public Facebook pages of 127 mayoral candidates, 6 political party leaders and 18 regional political leaders of the main entities that competed in the elections, the Socialist Party, the 'Together We Win' coalition and the Democratic Party.

The Socialist Party of Albania, led by Prime Minister Edi Rama, achieved an almost plebiscite victory in the May 14 local elections, electing its candidates to run 53 municipalities out of 61 local government units in total.

Taken together, the Socialist Party candidates have been the most active on social networks, generating 3.1 million interactions combined with Facebook followers and 16 million views on posted videos during the election campaign.

The socialist candidate with the largest social footprint on Facebook during the elections was Erion Veliaj, followed by Gledian Llatja, Emiriana Sako and Safet Gjici.

The candidates of the Together We Win coalition had half the interactions of their socialist rivals on Facebook. Crowdtangle data shows that during the election campaign, they recorded 1.4 million interactions and 11.8 million views of their videos.

The candidate with the most video views and interactions was Belind Kelliçi, followed by Igli Cara and Bardh Spahia.

The SP was the most voted entity in the municipal councils, where it secured 46.9% of the votes and 757 councilor mandates. The main political leaders also played an important role in the campaign for the local elections on social networks.

Among them, the most influential was Prime Minister Edi Rama, who through his page with more than 1.6 million followers on Facebook, generated 2.2 million interactions and 11 million videos watched during the election campaign.

After Rama, in the virtual competition on social media, Sali Berisha ranks with 4.5 million video views and 631 thousand interactions and Ilir Meta with 2.3 million video views and 166 thousand interactions.

The Eylli effect

Big Brother Vip Albania is a television competition based on the Dutch television format of the same name created by John de Mol, which follows a group of VIP contestants isolated in a custom-built house. Each week one of the contestants is evicted from the house based on public votes. The last remaining contestant wins a prize of 100,000 euros.

Luiz Ejlli was announced on May 6 as the winner of the second edition of Big Brother Albania VIP. By profession a lawyer, singer and former graduate, before winning 'Big Brother', Ejlli also won the 44th edition of the Song Festival at RTSH and in 2006, he represented Albania at Eurovision.

Although a well-known character, participation in the 'Big Brother' show brought fame and attention to Ejli during the time he was locked in the so-called 'most famous house in Albania'. Support for Ejli was almost fanatical in his hometown of Shkodër and in northern Albania, where a series of posters appeared in support of him during his time on the show.

Ejlli's popularity did not go unnoticed by the leaders of the Socialist Party involved in the election campaign, especially after he thanked the socialist candidate for Shkodër municipality, Benet Becin, during the show.

Former deputy of the Socialist Party in Shkodër district, Beci previously headed the Albanian Electric Corporation, KESH and the Albanian Development Fund.

In a confession full of 'tears' in the semi-final of Big Brother, Ejlli recalled a difficult moment in his life, when he had lost his job and Beci had offered him a position as a specialist in KESH.

"When those you think you were close to don't help you, how can you claim that someone will help you just because they are from Shkodran," Ejlli declared, explaining that Beci had hired him in the public corporation, KESH, based on the criteria of common origin.

"He helped me, he put me to work directly and I am grateful to him all my life," he added.

After leaving 'Big Brother', on May 11, Ejlli traveled to Shkodra to join Benet Beci's campaign. In a video posted on Facebook by the socialist candidate, Ejlli did not spare good words for his former employer.

"When I really needed someone, the only person who honestly answered the phone was Benet Beci," says Ejlli, under the sound of the socialist candidate's election campaign song entitled, "Si ke nđa".

"He is a good man, he will be a good man, and he will help you all with all the possibilities he has," he added.

This video posted by Beci has received 549,467 views on Facebook and generated more than 21,000 interactions, ranking as the second most popular post by the mayoral candidates during the campaign, surpassed only by Ejlli's wedding to Kiara Tito on the terrace of the municipality of Tirana.

Eyll's influence on the Socialist campaign has not been limited to the candidates' posts. 'Crowdtangle' data analyzed by BIRN show that more than 1,300 news items have been posted by online media regarding his statements about Beci and the marriage crowned by Erion Veliaj. These news have generated more than 125 thousand interactions on Facebook./ BIRN
