The Democratic Party demands the dismissal of Erion Veliaj as mayor of Tirana:

The Democratic Party has demanded the dismissal of Erion Veliaj as mayor of Tirana.

The letter was sent to the Mayor of the Municipal Council, Romina Kuko, by the head of the Democratic Party's Group of Advisors, Ilir Alimehmeti.

The DP argues that Erion Veliaj has been absent from duty for 3 months and has requested a meeting of the Municipal Council on May 12, one day after the elections, to dismiss him according to the legislation in force.

The law states that "The mayor is dismissed by decision of the Council of Ministers in cases where (point c) he is proposed for dismissal by the relevant municipal council for failure to appear for duty for a period of 3 months."

"We request a meeting of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Tirana, on May 12, 2025, the first working day after the expiration of the 3-month period of uninterrupted absence from duty of Mr. Erion Veliaj, with the aim of implementing the legislation in force and proposing to the Council of Ministers the dismissal of Mr. Erion Veliaj ," the document states.

Erion Veliaj has been behind bars since February 10, after being arrested in his office at the Tirana Municipality.

The mayor is in custody in Durrës.

His position has been taken by Anuela Ristani, the chairwoman appointed by Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Based on Law No. 139/2015 "On Local Self-Government, as amended, Article 62, letter e, which states that "The Mayor is dismissed by decision of the Council of Ministers in cases where (point c) is proposed for dismissal by the relevant municipal council for failure to appear for duty for an uninterrupted period of 3 months, we would like to inform you that the 3-month period cited in the law ends this weekend. having begun on February 10, 2025 on the day of the arrest of Mr. Erion Veliaj.

As a result, we request:

Meeting of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Tirana, on May 12, 2025, the first working day after the expiration of the 3-month period of uninterrupted absence from duty of Mr. Erion Veliaj, with the purpose of implementing the legislation in force and proposing to the Council of Ministers the dismissal of Mr. Erion Veliaj.
