A general for President, here is what is expected to happen until the final vote
Bajram Begaj

The Socialist Party proposes the Chief of the General Staff of the Army, Bajram Begaj, as a candidate for President of Albania. The Prime Minister and Chairman of the Socialist Party, Edi Rama, praised General Bajram Begaj as "the example of that normalcy, citizenship and sense of service to the country and the people of this country that the Presidency urgently needs."

His candidacy complements Prime Minister Rama's warning that "the SP will not propose any name from the deputies of the SP parliamentary group, or those who in some way have ties with the SP."

DP: Illegal voting only by socialist deputies

The Socialist Party and the opposition led by the Democratic Party failed to reach an agreement on a consensual candidate in the previous three rounds. The Socialist Party refused to include the Re-establishment Group in the process of reaching an agreement on a consensual name, arguing that this group has elected former Prime Minister Berisha as chairman, who has been declared "persona non grata" by the US government for significant corruption and minimization of democracy in Albania ”. But the official DP and the Re-establishment Group failed to agree to submit a candidacy.

Sources from Parliament told DW that the voting will take place on Saturday afternoon (04.06). The Socialist majority has 74 votes, while the president is elected by a simple majority of 71 votes. The chairman of the PD parliamentary group, Enkelejd Alibeaj, has warned that the Democratic deputies will not participate in the plenary voting session "in order not to legitimize the capture by the majority and the institution of the president".

Former Prime Minister Berisha announced that the Democratic MPs, who support the Re-establishment Group, will participate in the session and will vote against.
