The Ministry of Health and Social Protection, in response to the news published by some media regarding the closure of the Tepelena Hospital, clarifies that there is no plan to close this hospital.

"The National Hospital Plan aims to organize quality hospital care, cost-effective infrastructure and human resources, in accordance with morbidity, demographics, geography and unmet needs", the ministry informs.

The reaction comes after the news published in some media where it was said that the services of this hospital would be transferred to Gjirokastër, while in Tepelena it would function only as a health center. According to the Ministry of Health, this hospital will be transformed to serve the elderly, whose number is increasing in this city.

Announcement of the Ministry of Health:

In the framework of this Plan, hospital activities, human resources, equipment and distances have been analyzed.

The Tepelena Hospital has 72 beds and in 2022 it performed a total of 160 admissions, 35 EKG, 7 Echo, no roentgenographic examination. The bed utilization rate was around 3%. During 2022, it offered about 3,500 emergency visits. So, the citizens of Tepelena were mainly served with 24-hour service. 

The Ministry of Health and Social Protection underlines that the Tepelene hospital will not be closed, but will be gradually transformed into a hospital that will better serve the needs of the population with changed demographics, where the elderly population has increased, and the needs that this population has, not fulfilled until now, such as palliative care, geriatrics and rehabilitation. Beds destined in the old plan for surgery, obstetrics, etc., will have their destination changed for the real needs of the citizens of Tepelena, at this stage of the transformations that have taken place in health.

This transformation, which will happen gradually, has been well thought out and consulted with all structures, including the local structures of Tepelena. It has been publicly consulted and launched at the First Health Congress in March 2023.
