Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Igli Hasani, paid a visit to Athens where he met today with his counterpart, Giorgos Gerapetritis.

Following the meeting between the two delegations, the ministers held a joint press conference. Gerapetritis said they discussed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations.

"The shadows that have shaken the relations between our two countries must disappear and not be repeated. We must look to the future with a positive attitude, based on commitment to international law and the continuous effort for friendly and good neighborly relations ," said Gerapetritis.

The Greek chief diplomat described the enlargement of the European Union to the Western Balkans as necessary for the security and stability of the region. Regarding Albania, he stressed that official Athens has given its consent to the launch of negotiations and has "assessed the progress" made in specific chapters.

Also, an issue that he touched on and emphasized as important for Greece is the issue of the Greek minority in Albania. The Greek minister underlined to Greek journalists that he feels happy alongside Hasani not only because the Albanian diplomat does not need translation from Greek since he speaks it, "thanks to his Greek origin, which he honors today."

"The Greek national minority is one of the strongest links in the relations between our two countries. It has been, for centuries, a bridge of communication and understanding between the two peoples. The same can be said for the large number of Albanians living and working in Greece, who have distinguished themselves for their extremely successful integration into Greek society," the Greek minister said.

Minister Igli Hasani, for his part, began his statement in Greek.

He said that it is the right time to have a good approach to the still open issues as well as to strengthen a dialogue with Greece and a long-term relationship.

We recall that a day ago in an interview with the newspaper "Ta Nea", Hasani said that the Albanian government "remains open and fully committed to promoting dialogue on all pending bilateral issues" with Greece.

He did not rule out the prospect of The Hague defining the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) between Greece and Albania, while expressing confidence that all unresolved bilateral issues can be addressed.

"Through continued dialogue and constructive cooperation, we believe it is possible to address all relevant issues in a manner that complies with international rules," he said.
