In a European Union effort to stop illegal immigration, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz hinted Saturday during a conference in Malaga, Spain, that he was willing to review Italy's deal to ban migrants in Albania.

"Don't forget that Albania will be a member of the EU very soon, in our opinion, implying that we are talking about how we can solve the challenges and problems together within the EU family. Such deals, which have been seen there, are possible and we will all be watching this closely," he said.

Rome and Albania reached a consensus on Monday on the construction of two camps for the reception and detention of seafaring migrants. Scholz and the heads of Germany's 16 states had reached an agreement on Tuesday on a stricter immigration policy and increased funding for refugees. The need for a clear European migration policy, according to Scholz, is "to correct things that were not right in the past (and) to create a mechanism of solidarity so that not every single country tries to face the challenges alone ".

The European Parliament's current legislature must complete the review of the bloc's immigration and asylum laws, he said. Scholz added that integration should happen "soon" for six Western Balkan states that were promised EU membership 20 years ago. Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine should also be considered for membership.
