The agreement stipulates that immigrants will be received at the reception center with the sole purpose of carrying out border or repatriation procedures, provided for by Italian and European legislation and for the necessary time. In case they no longer have the right to stay in the structures, Italy immediately transfers the immigrants from the Albanian territory.

Is there a risk that there are terrorists among immigrants?

There is no reason to be afraid. We just need to have the will and care to fulfill this commitment while respecting human dignity and the rules established for the operation of this joint operation, which also include control by the security agencies of both countries.

Aren't you afraid that Italy will abandon your refugees?

The answer is in the agreement. The period of stay in the Albanian territory cannot exceed the maximum allowed by the Italian legislation on this matter. The Italian authorities, at the end of the procedures carried out in accordance with their legislation, will take measures for removal.

Who will come to Albania? At first it seemed to be only for men

Those who conveyed to the media in a distorted way what Meloni said at the press conference, spoke of "men". The prime minister underlined that minors and pregnant women do not belong to the categories of people who will be received at the reception center in Albania.

Have you been contacted by other European countries after the agreement with Italy?

No. And we will not be in favor of any request, just as we were not in favor of similar requests before Italy asked us. In Rome we could not say no because we owe a debt of gratitude that we will never be able to repay, but that we must never forget.

Will the issues related to the asylum request be handled by the Italian lawyers who come to Albania?

This operation will be 100% the responsibility of the Italian side, in every aspect.

One of the Albanian opposition parties claims that it is not constitutional to give land to another state?

Our laws on this point are clear: the agreement will be ratified by Parliament in the coming weeks.

Former Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha told "Corriere" that he is afraid of xenophobia and protests against Italians. What answer do you give?

I never respond in a foreign language to the opposition in Albania, and I do not comment on the words of a politician like him, declared undesirable by the USA for "the serious corruption that involved his family and for undermining democracy" in our country. . I don't even comment in Albanian. Fortunately, Albanians know well what immigration is and hospitality towards those in need.

Are you unhappy with the reaction of the Italian Democratic Party?

I was surprised. They have the right to oppose and criticize their government, but there is no reason to include socialism and the Albanian executive. Governments come and go, interpretations of socialism change, but Albania and Italy are always there, inextricably linked in good times and bad.

Why do you criticize the Italian Democratic Party for its reaction and the phenomenon of migration?

Nothing! No one in Europe can say they have the ideal and functional solution at the same time. Until Europe has a solution accepted by all – even in its daily application – this will remain a story of political battles and games in the member states.

Have you had any feedback, even informal, from the rest of PSE?

No, no reaction.

You seem to have a special relationship with some Italian prime ministers like Renzi and Meloni. A little less with others, for example Draghi. Why?

You are wrong, but it is not your fault: Draghi is lucky to live without social networks and he cannot know that my relationship with him is also special. To be clear: one of the greatest privileges I've had is that Mario asked me to address him by name. He is a living monument.

After all the hype, are you still convinced about this deal with Italy?

"Noises" like these, as you rightly call them, do not bother me at all.
